Unfortunately, MetaMask has a bug that redirects to the app store rather than the MetaMask app when selected. This bug almost exclusively affects wallets updated from older versions, and also occurs in other wallets (e.g. Coinbase Wallet.) We are working on how to circumvent this bug, but we have limited control over issues coming from the wallet providers and/or device operating systems.
If you’re encountering this but still want to use your MetaMask Wallet, there are two ways to do so. The quick, zero-risk way is to use a desktop device when connecting your wallet or transferring your DESK. You’ll still be able to claim DESK rewards when logged into coindesk.com in a mobile browser, but you’ll need to use your desktop device when connecting your wallet, transferring your balance, and using your tokens in the DESK ecosystem.
There is another way for you to be able to not only use your MetaMask Wallet on mobile, but access the elevated experience available to most other MetaMask users when interacting with DESK.
That said, this solution is not without risk. If you do not complete all of the following steps in order, it will not work, and you may even lose access to the tokens in your wallet.
First, verify that you have stored an accurate copy of your Secret Recovery Phrase somewhere you can access. In the next step, you will delete your wallet, and the only way to retain access to any tokens in that wallet is by importing your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase. Double- and triple-check that your Secret Recovery Phrase is accurate and stored somewhere outside of your wallet before moving on to the next step.
Select the stack of three blue lines in the top, left-hand corner of the home screen to open the side menu. You can access your settings by selecting the “Settings'' option, the fourth option from the bottom. Next, select the Security and privacy options, the second option in the list. After that, scroll to the bottom of the page where “Delete Wallet” is the second to last option and details the consequences of deletion. After selecting “Delete Wallet,” you’ll trigger a screen reiterating that the only way to recover your wallet after deletion is with your Secret Recovery Phrase. If you followed all instructions in the previous step, select “I understand, continue” to move on. As an additional security measure, MetaMask requires you to enter “delete” and select a red, pill-shaped button labeled “Delete my wallet.”
After deleting your wallet, uninstall the MetaMask app from your mobile device. It’s important that you delete the app rather than just simply removing it from your home screen. Once the app is deleted, turn off your device, and wait 5 seconds before turning it back on.
After restarting your device, reinstall and open the MetaMask app. At the bottom of the screen, there are two pill-shaped buttons stacked on top of each other. Select the top, unfilled button labeled “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase”. You’ll then need to enter your seed phrase word for word, making sure to add spaces between words (but not after the last word.) After that, you’ll pick a new password, which can be the same as your old password or a totally new password.
After selecting “Import” you have access to your old wallet. That said you will need any networks you previously used and any tokens you imported. You’re now ready to connect your wallet on your mobile device using WalletConnect. You don’t have to do this to connect your wallet or to transfer your balance to your wallet, but check out “How To: Configure Your Metamask For Use With DESK” to finish getting set up for use in the DESK ecosystem.
